The redevelopment project of the former Santa Elisabetta Slaughterhouse transforms a disused area into a center dedicated to ecological education, urban regeneration, and social inclusion. The intervention preserves the original spatial layout while optimizing its functionality: the main hall has been resized for more efficient use, and the new structural configuration removes internal load-bearing elements, improving the usability of the spaces. The expansion of the upper volume increases the surface area for photovoltaic panels and optimizes climate control, with segmented façades that protect against direct sunlight.
The project also includes the restoration of the pedestrian path connecting the area to the city center, enhancing safety and accessibility with new urban furniture, low-impact LED lighting, and paving made from local materials. The introduction of green areas and the enhancement of historic public spaces strengthen integration with the context, fostering new opportunities for the community and sustainable territorial development. The use of eco-friendly materials and sustainable urban drainage strategies has improved the area’s resilience.
Outdoor spaces have been redeveloped with green areas, pedestrian paths, and urban furniture designed to encourage socialization and outdoor learning. The intervention ensures barrier-free routes with ramps and inclusive signage. Interior and exterior environments have been organized to facilitate interaction among users of all ages, promoting active community participation.
